/thalassotherapy/: the use of salt water as a therapeutic treatment

The other day I was sitting around thinking about my memories of going to the Jersey Shore as a child. Mixed in with my memories of splashing in the water with cousins and collecting seashells in the sand was the interesting thing my Grandma would always do. She never used to like going into the water; however, she would always make sure to go down to the water for just a moment and take a handful of water and splash it in her face and then continue to splash some sea water all over her body, before finding her place back in the sand.
It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I decided to ask her about the reason she would do this on our yearly beach trip. My Grandmother’s response was a typical one. She smiled and said “My mother always used to tell me that the sea water keeps your skin young. Trust me it works because she never had any wrinkles”

It turns out that my Great Grandmother and Grandmother might be right. Himalayan Salt (often referred to as “pink gold”) contains trace minerals that nourish and hydrate the skin. It is said that salt water also helps to provide a clearer complexion and reduce acne. When I was in my early 20s I remember making myself a sea salt water spray and spraying it on my face daily, but for some reason I stopped doing it and forgot all about it. But a couple of weeks ago I decided to make one with Himalayan salt. I have used it daily on my face and love how soft and moist my skin feels. This is a very light nourishing spray that is perfect to spray and leave on the skin all day. Of course, I think my favorite part of this spray is the light pink tint from the Himalayan salt 😉 !!

  • A glass spray bottle
  • 1 tablespoon of fine Himalayan Salt
  • 1 cup of boiled water

  1. Boil Water and allow the water to slightly cool
  2. When the water is warm add the Himalayan salt and allow the salt to dissolve
  3. Apply to skin daily. You may need to give it a shake prior to applying to allow the salt to mix back in with the water.
  4. If you prefer to not spray it on you can also apply with a cotton ball

I hope this makes your skin feel super soft and super refreshed and that you love it as much as I do!!
